How to Play Snake Like a Pro: 7 Tips for a High Score

Snake is the simplest game in the world to understand and one of the hardest to master. Eat the apple, grow longer, don't hit anything. Yet most players crash before scoring 100. The difference between a casual player and a pro is not reflexes — it's technique. Here are 7 tips that actually work.

1. Plan two turns ahead, not one

Beginners steer toward the next apple. Pros steer toward the apple after that. Before you eat, already know where you're going next — your snake grows with every apple, and a body that's suddenly longer turns your 'safe' path into a trap.

The habit to build: every time an apple spawns, trace a mental route to it and then one step beyond. If you can't see the exit, don't take the apple yet.

2. Use the whole board — don't camp in corners

Hugging walls feels safe, but it halves your escape options. The middle of the board gives you room to maneuver in every direction. Stay central when you're long, and only cut close to edges when you're short and fast.

Think of the board as breathing room. The longer your snake, the more of it you need.

3. Slow down when you're long

Speed kills more snakes than walls do. When your snake fills a quarter of the board, make smaller, calmer turns. Quick 180-degree reversals are the #1 cause of self-collisions — leave at least one tile of turning room.

If the game has a speed setting, resist the urge to max it out. A steady medium pace scores higher than frantic sprinting.

4. Trap yourself on purpose (the coil trick)

Advanced players coil their snake in a spiral pattern when the board gets crowded. Move in a large circle, keeping your head on the outside of the coil. This keeps your tail compact and predictable, and the inside of the spiral becomes a safe zone for grabbing apples.

It feels counterintuitive to wrap yourself up, but a tight coil is far safer than a snake sprawled randomly across the board.

5. Chase the far apples first

Apples near your tail are dangerous — eating them extends the exact body part you're about to run into. Prioritize apples far from your tail, even if closer ones are tempting. The extra travel time is cheaper than a crash.

As a rule: if an apple spawns inside your coil or right behind your head, circle once and reassess before going for it.

6. Count your tail, not your score

Your score is just your tail length times ten. Watch the tail, not the number. Know roughly how long you are — a 40-segment snake needs twice the turning room of a 20-segment one. Most late-game crashes happen because players forget how much body they're dragging.

Every few apples, glance at your full body and re-plan your movement pattern around its real size.

7. Practice the zigzag escape

When you're long and cornered, the zigzag saves runs: alternate left-right (or up-down) turns every tile to compress your snake into a tight wave. This buys space fast and turns a dead end into an exit lane.

Drill it in the early game when mistakes are cheap. In a real high-score run, the zigzag should be muscle memory — you'll need it exactly when there's no time to think.

Put it together: your first 500-point run

Play three short sessions with one focus each: session one, plan two turns ahead; session two, stay central and coil when crowded; session three, chase far apples and zigzag out of trouble. Don't chase records — chase clean runs with zero near-misses.

Most players break 500 within a few days of deliberate practice. After that, it's just you versus your own high score — which is exactly what Snake has always been about. Play free Snake right now on PlayZone: no download, no signup, just you and the apples.
